The Best Sunscreen

Finding the right sun protection for your skin can be tricky, as there are simply so many different products on the market. There are different formulas and, of course, the different levels of sun protection factor (SPF) to consider. A common confusion relates to the SPF 30 vs 50 debate, with many not quite understanding which one to choose.

In this article, we look at the respective benefits of both SPF levels to give you an idea of what each one gives you. So, without further ado, let’s dive in.

SPF 30 vs 50 & Understanding the Basics

When trying to make a decision with regard to SPF 30 vs 50, it’s important that you understand the basics of SPF. Essentially, it’s a measure of a sunscreen’s ability to protect your skin from the sun’s often harmful UVB rays. An SPF number indicates the amount of time you can stay out in the sun without becoming burned (compared to not wearing sunscreen)

For example, if it takes 10 minutes for your skin to begin burning when not wearing sunscreen, an SPF 30 would (in theory) delay the process by a factor of 30. This would mean it would take 300 minutes for the same thing to happen (and 500 minutes with an SPF 50)

However, It’s Not Just About Duration

The protection duration of each level of SPF is a big consideration, but it’s not the only element at play. In addition, there’s a difference between the percentage of UVB rays that it’s able to block. In the first instance, an SPF 30 blocks approximately 97%, while an SPF 50 blocks around 98%.

While this might seem like a negligible difference at first glance, it can represent a more meaningful variation if you happen to be someone with fair skin. Also, if you’re someone who spends a lot of time outdoors, that extra 1% can be enough of a reason to choose an SPF 50 over the alternative.

Fair-skinned people tend to be more prone to UV damage and skin cancer, so every little bit matters when trying to safeguard your skin health. Also, if you live in an area of the US in which the sun is more intense (e.g. Arizona, Utah, New Mexico), an SPF 50 would likely be the best option, as would be the case if you’re spending time near reflective surfaces like snow or water.

SPF 30 vs 50 – The Ultimate Choice is Yours

When trying to decide between the two options, it’s ultimately going to come down to your individual needs. If you’re someone with sensitive skin who spends a good deal of time in the great outdoors, then you’re going to be better served by the extra protection of an SPF 50. SPF 30 is a reliable and effective option, but that little bit more can make a big difference.

Irrespective of the SPF you choose, it’s worth noting that proper application is essential, meaning that you should apply the product generously and re-apply it every two hours. Back this up with the wearing of sunglasses, clothes and sun hats, and you’re much more likely to enjoy time in the sun without any sun damage occurring.
